But they can still win two of their three remaining games to all but assure finishing ahead of Sunderland in the league table. Despite the injuries, missed opportunities to earn points, and uncertainty surrounding Joey Barton and Jose-Enrique, they ought to make Birmingham work at St. James' Park on Saturday. A victory wouldn't be more difficult that holding Manchester United to a draw a month ago.

So I am standing by my prediction. Newcastle 2, Birmingham City 1.
